Public hearings set to address heroin, opioid crisis

The meetings come as Philadelphia has the highest rate of drug overdoses in Pennsylvania. There were more than 650 overdose deaths in Philadelphia in 2014, with about 370 of those having prescription opioids in their system. Heroin was found in the system of more than half of those who overdosed.

The community meeting began Monday night at Northeast High School. Others will be held on April 25 at the Acme Sav-on Pharmacy Kleinlife, 10100 Jamison Ave.; April 27 at the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center, 7 Lock St,; April 28 at the Maritime Academy Charter High School, 2700 E. Huntingdon St.; May 2 at the Philadelphia Recovery Community Center, 1701 W Lehigh Ave.; May 5 at the University of the Sciences, Pharm Tox Building, Room 140, 636 S 42nd St.; and May 12 at the Palumbo Recreation Center, 700 S. 9th St.
