The end of the Civil War brought great changes for America’s African-American population. While no longer slaves, they faced great challenges in their struggle to participate equally in American society. This seminar, led by David Hudiak, will describe those challenges and detail the different approaches of Northerners to elevate the status of Black Americans, as well as efforts in the South to relegate them to second class citizenship.
